All martial arts instructors at Still Water Martial Arts in Arlington Heights, IL are trained to ensure that our martial arts classes are safe, effective, and fun.
Our instructors and instructor assistants are trained to focus on more than just teaching martial arts skills. Still Water Martial Arts staff also are taught how to work with all students, tailoring their martial arts teaching methods to fit the individual child.
Emphasis is put on encouragement and positive correction.
We are committed to teaching the physical skills of martial arts while applying attitude-shaping exercises aimed at bringing out the best character and physical potential in each student.
Through weekly martial arts training, instructors advance their knowledge, skills, and abilities to become even more effective martial arts teachers.
The Still Water Martial Arts instructors are required to continually enhance their martial arts knowledge and personal growth. They are expected to take instructor classes regularly and test at least once per year.

Martial Arts Instructors Biographies
Mr. Zachary Mashburn is our Owner and Chief Instructor. Mr. Mashburn began his training with the World Tang Soo Do Association in August, 2009 while he was in college and has never stopped. The World Tang Soo Do Association, one of the premier Martial Arts Associations in the world with over 300 master instructors and 500 locations across the globe. He learned his first degree black belt in 2013, his second degree black belt in 2016, his third degree black belt in 2019. The next step is to be invited to Masters camp and begin the two-year testing process.
Mr. Mashburn has been teaching in the Martial Arts since 2010. He started as the karate club president at Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, IN. In 2015 he began teaching at Northwest Indiana Martial Arts Academy in Schererville, IN. During the 8 years that he taught at this location he saw it grow from 100 students to over 300 students in 2023. Today, Mr. Mashburn operates SWMA’s new 2000+ sq foot location at 2300- B Rand Rd in Arlington Heights, where the he is excited to bring focus, confidence, and leadership to the Northwest Suburbs.
Mr. Mashburn has a passion for teaching the Martial Arts and our Anti-Bully program. He not only enjoys teaching at the studio, but he also enjoys the opportunity to go to other locations like schools, churches or scout troops to share his knowledge.
Mr. Mashburn’s goal is to build SWMA into the premier family Martial Arts Academy in the area. His own family participates! His wife will be testing for her black belt in October of 2024.
